5-Minute SEO Guide for Small Business Owners

Last updated: April 24, 2017

Are you trying to find good SEO services for your local business to improve your visibility in Google? It does not have to cost you a lot of money or be too involved.

By following some basic rules, you can drive more visitors to your website. SEO consists of four distinct tasks.

  1. Choosing the correct keywords
  2. Writing good content
  3. Performing on-site optimisation
  4. Adding backlinks to your site

The first step for any small business SEO is to select the correct keywords.

By finding keywords that are tightly focused on your business activities and what your potential customers and visitors to your website are searching for and making sure they are not to competitive and you can afford to invest the necessary time and money to rank for them.

Do not think too broadly, but pick the right keywords (focus on around 5 or 6) if you have a small business with a small budget you can still get results.

Once you have decided what keywords to target you can produce individual pages of content for each one.

Make sure the content is closely aligned with the needs and interests of the people who are searching for that keyword.

It is important that your content should be more in-depth, informative and relevant than the current content that is already ranking on the first page for the given keywords.

Make sure you include the keyword in the new content of the page, add it to the pages URL, the page title, the meta description and the H1 tag.

These are the primary fundamental steps of on-site optimisation that are easy to implement, it is a little more involved than this but by adding the keywords in these places will help your search engine rankings.

The process of creating good content and optimising it will help your website ranking in search engines, but there are other off-site factors you will have to consider if you want it to rank highly.

The amount of backlinks and the trust flow/citation flow (quality) of those backlinks that link to your site from other sites will be a deciding factor in what sites will appear on the 1st page of the search results for any given keyword.

So to recap the elements that are required to rank on the 1st page for a keyword a site needs to first focus on selecting the right keywords, write high quality content, gain good quality backlinks and do this better than the sites that are ranking on the 1st page of Google for the keyword you are targeting.

By reverse engineering, the backlinks of the sites that are ranking on the 1st page of Google is a good starting point. If they link to your competitors, it is likely they will also link to your business site also.

Get in touch with suppliers and businesses related to your site and reach out to bloggers and other sites that produce relevant content to you site. Ask them to link to your site.

It takes time for the SEO benefits to gaining backlinks to take effect, over time as the search engines index these backlinks your rankings will improve resulting in more targeted visitors to your website.
